Statement of need:

Republic of Moldova has recently celebrated its 20th anniversary as an independent, democratic country. The country is going through major reforms in the judiciary, politics and public administration sector, which need to consolidate through the involvement of the entire civil society, especially the youth, an objective whose importance was mentioned in a wide variety of reports on Moldovan youth civil participation by World Bank, UNDP, UN, USAID. Taking advantage of Moldovan youth’s special interest for English language, the project aims to create creative opportunities to link school life to civic participation, to initiate a productive dialogue between school students and local authorities and involve local schools in community development projects.

Project description:

The project aims to increase youth civic engagement through EFL school educational projects in 2 regions from Moldova, including Transnistria (the breakaway territory located between the River Dniester and the eastern Moldovan border with Ukraine which after the War of Transnistria in 1992 proclaimed itself an independent state) involving over 50 participants, who will work closely with teachers, school principals, mass media and local authorities in their communities. In addition to improving their English speaking skills, the project will offer its participants outside the capital city the opportunity to develop important characteristics of citizenship and result in greater civic participation later in life, which is so important for the health and performance of democracy in Moldova. To ensure a successful country wide youth engagement, the project will also run online, through a common project blog where participants will regularly post pictures, videos, interviews with local authorities and ensure a tight collaboration of various sites when exchanging ideas for creative, innovative civic projects.
